Giovanni Panerai founded his business in Florence in 1860, specializing in the development of military and time-measuring instruments. In 1916, Panerai created a mixture of radium and zinc sulfide, enclosed in glass containers, which became the basis for the "Radiomir" line of watches, highly prized by collectors.
In the 1930s and 1940s, Panerai supplied watches to various units of the Italian Navy, including the Decima Mas, which carried out special raids against Allied ships during World War II. These large watches, among the first dedicated to military use, had stainless steel cases and Cortebert movements produced for Rolex. Luminous "sandwich" dials were another Panerai innovation and are still present in modern models.
After the war, Panerai developed a new tritium-based luminescent technology called "Luminor", which replaced the previous Radiomir technology. This luminous compound was accompanied by a new case design with a bridge and locking mechanism to increase water resistance, creating one of the most iconic designs still in production.
In 1972, after the death of Giuseppe Panerai, the company was taken over by engineer Dino Zei and renamed Officine Panerai SrL. The company, which until then had produced exclusively for the military market, re-released three of its designs in 1993 to great success. Panerai was acquired by the Vendome Group in 1997, which later became the Richemont Group. Today, Panerai continues to produce models inspired by the Luminor and Radiomir designs, introducing new watches with complex in-house movements and innovative materials such as the patented Carbotech.
