About the watch

The Rolex Explorer is a legendary watch created to celebrate the epic ascent of Mount Everest in 1953, when Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay took a prototype Rolex Oyster Perpetual with them.

Officially launched in the same year, the Explorer stands out for its robustness, readability and simplicity, designed for adventurers. The first models (reference 6350) had a black dial and the iconic numbers 3, 6, 9, features that have remained at the heart of the design.

Over the years, the Explorer has undergone technical and stylistic updates. In 1971, the Explorer II (ref. 1655) was born, with additional functions such as a 24-hour hand for cave and polar explorers. Updates have introduced more durable materials, improved caliber, and modern design details, such as the change from 36 mm to 39 mm in 2010 (ref. 214270) and the return to the classic 36 mm size in 2021.

Despite the changes, the Rolex Explorer has remained true to its mission: to be a reliable companion for adventurous spirits.

Know your watch

The Rolex Explorer I Ref. 124270 represents the perfect blend of tradition and innovation, embodying the spirit of adventure that has defined Rolex since its inception. Introduced in 2021, this model elegantly updates the iconic 1953 watch while remaining faithful to its pure, functional design. The 36 mm Oystersteel case recalls the original proportions while offering modern, comfortable wear. Inside, the calibre 3230, developed entirely by Rolex, guarantees extraordinary Superlative Chronometer-certified precision and a power reserve of up to 70 hours. The black dial, with Chromalight-treated indexes and numerals 3-6-9, ensures excellent legibility even in the most demanding conditions. An Oyster bracelet with safety clasp and the Easylink system completes the design, combining robustness and practicality. This watch, water-resistant to 100 metres, is a tribute to the historic 1953 expedition that took Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay to the summit of Everest. Perfect for those seeking a reliable and timeless companion, the Explorer I reflects Rolex's DNA: precision, elegance and resistance, designed to face any challenge with the same pioneering spirit that inspired it.
