About the watch

The Rolex Datejust is renowned for its versatility, but it's not typically considered as sporty as the Submariner. However, there's a notable exception: the Turn-O-Graph. Introduced in 1953, the Turn-O-Graph offered a more accessible option for chronograph enthusiasts, boasting an innovative design tailored for business travelers. Initially sporting a case akin to the Submariner with a rotating bezel, the Turn-O-Graph 6202 featured textured "honeycomb" dials and Mercedes-shaped hands reminiscent of the Submariner's style. Marketed as a practical choice for jet-setters, the Turn-O-Graph catered to business travelers until the arrival of the GMT Master in 1954.

As a cost-effective alternative to chronographs, the Turn-O-Graph provided a more budget-friendly solution compared to watches solely displaying time, sparing Rolex the necessity of developing a waterproof chronograph (as the Daytona had yet to be conceived). In 1956, Rolex honored the Thunderbirds, a US Air Force squadron, with a special variant of the Turn-O-Graph. The model 6609, based on the Datejust, featured an 18-carat gold case and a rotating bezel, earning the moniker "Thunderbird" in the United States.

Subsequently, in 1959, Rolex introduced the model 1625, available in two-tone steel or stainless steel with a white gold bezel. Unlike the Datejust, the Turn-O-Graph was never exclusively offered in steel. These models, such as the Turn-O-Graph reference 1625 with a silver dial and Jubilee bracelet, are rare finds in the market and highly coveted by collectors, offering an intriguing alternative to the Datejust.
